Messes and Mudpies Handmade Soap

Frequently Asked Questions

What's so special about handmade soap anyway?
Great question! My soaps are made by the cold process method, and produced in small batches, with the highest quality ingredients. Unlike commercial soaps you find in the supermarket, my products never contain synthetic detergents or petroleum products. I also leave in the naturally occurring glycerin. This gives my soaps a wonderful moisturizing quality - they don't leave that tight, dry feeling on your skin.

Don't your soaps contain sodium hydroxide (lye) and isn't it bad for your skin?
Yes and no. My soaps are made with sodium hydroxide.  This is what is used to make the lye solution.  Yes, it would be bad to put this on your skin alone.  But, when lye is combined with oils,  an amazing process called saponification occurs.  This is what makes soap, soap. By the time my soaps cure and are sold, the sodium hydroxide is no longer there.  It has changed and is safe to use!

Why are your ingredients so special?
Take a look at the ingredients under each product description. They all contribute a special quality to each bar.  I started with a lot of research, then painstaking trial and error.

Can this soap be used on your face?
Absolutely! I encourage you to use my soap for your entire body. Yes, even your face. I know that many of the supermarket bars are too drying for delicate facial skin, but handmade soap is much gentler. My complexion bars are formulated especailly for specific skin types, but any of my body bars can be used on your face too.

I have sensitive skin. Can I still use your products?
Most of my customers with sensitive skin find that my products are far gentler than the commercial products they've been using. If you have a specific allergy or special concern, be sure to ask me.

Do you test on animals?
No. I test first on myself, then on eager family and friends. There's never a shortage of volunteers!
