What makes handmade soap so speacial?
Great question! Our soaps are made by the cold process method with the highest quality ingredients. Unlike commercial soaps you have probably used, our products never contain synthetic detergents. Messes and Mudpies leaves in the naturally occurring glycerin giving our soaps a wonderful moisturizing quality. The biggest downside of handmade soap is their lifespan. Due to the lack of presevatives and synthetic detergents handmade soap dissolves in water quicker so it is reccamendd storing your soap in a cool dry place until ready for use. Also we suggest using a draining soap dish in the tub and shower to eliminate your soap sitting in puddles of water, therefore extending the life of the bar.
Do cold process soaps contain sodium hydroxide (lye) and isn't it bad for your skin?
Yes cold process soap requires the use of sodium hydroxide, commonly known as lye. The chemical reaction between lye and fatty acids (oils) produce soap through the process of saponification. Lye is caustic and would burn your skin if you were to come in contact with straight lye but after saponification occurs the lye begins to lose its alkaline properties. Once the bar is fully cured the lye has lost all alkaline properties and is safe for use on even the most delicate skin.
What ingredients are ued in your soaps?
Take a look at the ingredients under each product description. They all provide a special quality to each bar. We use a standard recipe for our soaps with few exceptions. The basic ingredients are coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil, avacado oil, shea butter, water and lye. For more detailed ingredient listing you can search for the specific product and see the ingredient listing below each product.
Can I use this soap on my face?
Yes! We encourage you to use my soap for your entire body including your face. Many of the supermarket bars are too drying for the face, but handmade soap is much more gentle and moisturizing. Messes and Mudpies complexion bars are formulated especailly for specific skin types, but any of our body bars can be used on your face too.
I have sensitive skin. Can I still use your products?
Most of our customers with sensitive skin find that our products are far gentler than the commercial products they've been using. Some of our customers have reported our soaps greatly helping their skin issues. We don't suggest using bars with fragrance or colorant if you have sensitive skin. We do supply a line of complexion bars that are fragrant and colorant free. If you have a specific allergy or special concern, be sure to ask contact us with questions.
